The temperatures have dropped with the arrival of showers and thunderstorms and are now down to just below 30 degrees Celsius, with a further drop expected Thursday, August 20th – down to 25 degrees.
The weather is becoming more unstable next week with almost daily showers – how much is, however, difficult to say.
Yesterday, Gevrey-Chambertin had 20mm, Morey-Saint-Denis 7,5 mm … 3-7 mm in Chambolle and below 1 mm in NSG and Vosne … big variation.
Looks like the rain in Gevrey could be enough to influence the ripening process… the others are too late, too little somehow.
But it is still raining outside the Winehog building …
and also in Meursault …
Rain and some geekyness
The main issue will be the alcohol levels … the reds are already around 13,5 degrees in some/many vineyards … and the whites are also reaching or surpassing the target.
Most will hope for an effect of the rain today … and during the week hope for a little more juice in the berries … likely? – There is, however, still a chance to get some more in these thunderstorms.
The phenolic ripeness is still a part of the theme … and this year with a twist due to the drought. More about this in these reflections about the ripening process.
Harvest activity
Quite a lot of prominent estates will start at the beginning of this week … names like Dujac, Cécile Tremblay, Rousseau, and DRC are expected to start Tuesday or Wednesday.
Chartron … is still harvesting and will presumably take the top cuveé Chevallier Montrachet today and is near the end of his harvesting campaign.
Jean-Michel is happy with the fruit that is coming in – harvest starts at 04.00 in the morning, to ensure cooler retrieval of the grapes from the vineyards to the press.
Sugar levels are still reasonable … 13,5% on average … there is still a chance to make some lovely wines in 2026. Sadly, yields are low … 50% of a normal harvest or so!
Domaine Garcia – Pierre-Olivier Garcia … started Sunday with a small new 1er cru … more about this later. Alcohol at around 13,5% and the balance seemed lovely, as is the fruit. Will be a rich year … but the freshness seems to be there. Yields are not great ,,,
