The 2012 vintage is soon going to be bottled and the hype of this lovely new vintage is already starting to build up.
In connection with my first day at Grands Jours de Bourgogne I had the opportunity to taste a range of whites from three very fine producers – Jean-Noël Gagnard, Hubert Lamy and Domaine Roulot. Tasting notes from these visits will follow shortly.

These tastings confirmed my very positive initial impressions of the 2012 vintage – this is a outstanding vintage for the whites.
Impressions – White Burgundy 2012
The overall impressions of the 2012s whites are very positive. The whites are quite rich but with a finely balancing acidity. The fruit is vibrant and pure, but perhaps slightly on the richer and somtimes even approaching the dense side – but they have indeed gained focus and lost some weight during the months on cask.
All the whites I tasted were beautifully balanced with a fine nervy acidity – the acidity level is perhaps not quite as high as in 2010 – but the expression of the acidity is very fine … this is very good stuff.
Bottom line: The tastings confirmed my positive view on the white 2012s – they are forward and gorgeous and are surprisingly fine given the weather conditions – with a beautiful balance between the quite rich fruit and the fresh, nervy balancing acidity. Will they rival the 2010s – perhaps not – but they could be quite close to vintages like 2008, 2007 and 2011 quality wise.
A note on the comparition with the 2010s … quite many 2010s have a slight hint of botrytis … this is not found in the 2012s I have tasted … so in that sense the 2012 has a higher level of purity.
Please note the conditions were very difficult, and there is a risk for large variation in quality among the lesser producers … so be carefull when you pick the 2012s.
