Discovering Echézeaux in detail – the project!

One of the first articles I made for this blog was an article about Echézeaux. While the article have been very popular with the readers, it really needs an update … so here we go.

Echézeaux is a very large and complex vineyard, and its therefore impossible to make one article, that covers all the topics around this extensive grand cru.

I’m therefore planning a series of articles covering different Echézeaux topics … and these will in the end be merged in some way to form the complete Echézeaux guide.

This is indeed a daunting task … as the Echézeaux vineyard is fragmented into more than 250 plots, and there are in total more than 50 owners on this large grand cru.

A little about the process with Echézeaux

Discovering vineyards and exploring current and historic ownership is very time consuming, as the access to information can be very difficult at times. Some of the larger producers have websites with excellent data and information’s about the vineyard holdings, and these producers are often quite well covered by the literature.

The small producers – especially those with a local focus – are however difficult to research, and in the end this is really delaying the publishing of the articles.

I have therefore decided to publish work in progress – i.e. when I have sufficient information to make a meaningful ownership map, I will publish the article based on the information I have.

This also means that the articles will be updated in an ongoing process as soon as new data becomes available.

The published ownership maps will include both confirmed ownerships (either by the producer or by several independent sources), and “non confirmed” ownerships where the research show that its likely that a plot is owned by the producer in question. This will be highlighted in the articles – with a (not confirmed) note.

The climates of Echézeaux

Echézeaux includes 11 climates covering in total 35.26 ha. Echézeaux is located between Chambolle and Vosne-Romanee and above Clos de Vougeot – see map below.

The 11 climates of Echézeaux are:

  1. Echezeaux du Dessus
  2. Les Poulailléres
  3. En Orveau
  4. Les Champs Traversins
  5. Les Rouges du Bas
  6. Les Beaux Monts Bas
  7. Les Loächausses
  8. Les Cruots ou Vigne Blanches
  9. Clos St. Denis
  10. Les Treux
  11. Les Quartieres de Nuits

I’m still working on some small details on the map. Firstly the border between Les Loächausses and Les Beaux Monts Bas secondly the border between Echézeaux du Dessus and Les Rouges du Bas – see more about this in the articles about the individual climates.

The Echézeaux program – first step

I start out with covering all the 11 climates of Echezeaux in separate articles, after this I will assemble and aggregate the information to cover the whole vineyard via the data assembled during the research of the individual climates.

The first article will be about the heart of Echézeaux – the climate Echézeaux du Dessus – stay tuned!
