Visit Domaine Dublère – tasting of the 2016s from cask

Good to be back at Domaine Dublère to taste the 2016s. Blair Pethel also suffered from the struggle with mother nature in this vintage, as the Savigny-Les-Beaune region was badly hit by the April 2016 frost.

It’s sad to see how the growers in this area of the Côte have to endure frost, hail and mildew every time there seem to be a weather related problem in Burgundy.

Amazingly they do seem to recover each year – and a great pleasure to see the quite abundant 2017 vintage in the cellar at Domaine Dublère – finally some wine in the cellar.

The 2016s at Domaine Dublère are lovely but however scarce – very limited quantities, but Blair have managed to maintain the elegant and balanced style of the wines – both reds and whites – despite the low yields after the frost and mildew.

A little background on Domaine Dublère

A little background – Domaine Dublère was founded in 2003 by the American journalist Blair Pethel. The first vintage was 2004, and the estate has since gradually expanded the production and the portfolio of wines.

Domaine Dublère now makes quite a large a selection of both white and red Burgundies – all of very high quality given the individual appellation. All the wines are very pure, intense, quite light-footed and with a precise and transparent expression of the terroir.

The wines are made both from rented vineyards and grapes from own vineyards – Blair actually owns a quite nice plot of Corton Charlemagne from where he produces his magnificent Corton Charlie.

I have followed Domaine Dublère since the 2007 vintage and always loved the transparent and terroir driven style. These wines should not be overlooked by any Burgundy collector.

Importantly – the wines of this estate have a strong hedonistic side, a side of enjoyment – one could even call it casual enjoyment – that is missing in many wines produced today. Who cares about points and ratings – enjoyment and vivid pleasure is the thing.
