The Grand Jours de Bourgogne is the perfect chance to get an overview of a vintage. This year the fine 2010 vintage was on display.
My tastings at Chateau Clos de Vougeot, in Gilly and in Nuit-Saint-Georges gave a somewhat blurred picture of the 2010 vintage. Quite a lot of wines are still on cask, while others was bottled weeks ago – and some were very recently bottled or prepared for botteling. Not ideal conditions for evaluating and comparing the wines – but it was still a unique chance to taste a lot of different wines from the vintage.
Status for the 2010 vintage
Despite the bottling issues I think it’s fair to say the vintage 2010 is outstanding, and in some cases even exceptionel – if you love classical Burgundy vintages. The 2010’s have a very nice fresh vibrant acdity, and a wonderfull expression of the terroir. The very best produceres have made the best of these conditions, and have produced wonderful complex wines, with a lot of finesse, terroir and first and foremost a crisp fresh fruitiness.
While great, the 2010 does not rival the 2005 as the best vintage in recent times. The quality is on average at least at the same level as 2002, but the variation seems bigger in 2010.
The best 2010 wines are in my view better than the top wines of 2009. The terroir expression is very distinct, and the acidity structure is fantastic, if you love classical Burgundy.
The downside is however wines with high yields, excessive oak and SO2 … these wines can seem quite lean and unbalanced in 2010. These are the same wines that benefited from the rich subtle fruit in 2009.
Not all wines are bottled yet, therefore the conclusion on the 2010 vintage is not final – but at the moment the verdict is outstanding rather than exceptionel.
