Domaine Grivot has been consistent in its quality over the last five years, if not even longer. Its wines are predictable in a good way, meaning that my expectations were high for the 2021s. The vintage, with its excellent acidity, good concentration, and structure, should suit the Grivot style well indeed.
As always, Mathilde Grivot presents the wines in an efficient and charming way; it is always a pleasure to visit here.

The 2021 tasting
Domaine Jean Grivot Coteaux Bourguignons 2021
The Coteaux Bourguignons is somewhat overlooked, and in the 2021 vintage, it has extra vivacity and playfulness. Made from 100% gamay, this is fresh and forward. What’s not to like?
(Drink From 2022) – Good+ – Tasted from cask 4/01/23 –
Domaine Jean Grivot Bourgogne Rouge 2021
The Bourgogne Rouge is showing delightful liveliness. While a lesser wine than the 2020, this shows much more delicacy, and a more assertive character. It puts the 2020 vs 2021 question in perfect perspective.
(Drink From 2022) – Good+ – Tasted from cask 4/01/23 –
Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 2021
One of the best qualities of the 2021 vintage is that it is able in the right hands to display the villages and terroirs loudly and clearly. This has clear, fresh, transparent Vosne-Romanée notes that are delicate and quite deep. It is a clear signal from Vosne, and not overly dense or extracted.
(Drink From 2030) – Very Good (89-90p) – Tasted from cask 4/01/23 –
Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Laviéres 2021
The Aux Laviéres 2021 is more open and gourmand than the denser, more heavily extracted 2020. It shows clear NSG character, and is silky and elegant. The extraction has been carefully judged in ’21, giving this more complex and refined notes. Quite saline with notes of “Chinese ink,” a fellow taster said. I guess I’d better find some to taste so I can understand what he meant!
(Drink From 2030) – Very Good (88p) – Tasted from cask 4/01/23
Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Charmois 2021
The Charmois is lively, cool, and earthy, despite being a problematic vineyard to pick in 2021. There were a fair few sanitary issues, and even with the finest sorting, the result was a bit cloudy. The fruit is fine, but this does not achieve a perfectly crystalline character.
(Drink From 2029) – Very Good (87p) – Tasted from cask 4/01/23
Domaine Jean Grivot Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveau 2021
On the border of Chambolle and Flagey-Echezeaux, the Combe d’Orveau contains a triumvirate of levels, with village, 1er cru, and grand cru vineyards spread among very different geologies. This is from the valley’s southern part, which is perhaps more Flagey than Chambolle limestone. It’s a very energetic wine, with the 2021 character adding to the tension. A hedonistic treat even in 2021; a lesser wine than 2020, but who cares?
(Drink From 2030) – Fine (89-90p) – Tasted from cask 4/01/23 –
Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée Bossieres 2021
The Vosne Bossieres is, as always, a step up from the regular Vosne village. It’s deeper and more elegant, with a beautiful bouquet of Vosne spices. A classical Vosne of medium weight, this is forward and enjoyable.
(Drink From 2030) – Very Good (89p) – Tasted from cask 4/01/23 –
Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 2021
Chaumes is really rocking in 2021! Normally not one of the strongest cuvees here, the 2021 version really is spot on. It’s open and very Vosne, with an explosion of spices. This has an unusual sophistication and is quite expressive! Bravo.
(Drink From 2030) – Fine+ (91p) – Tasted from cask 4/01/23 –
