Domaine Grivot has been highly consistent in its quality over the last five years, if not even longer. The wines here are predictable in a good way, meaning that high expectations for the 2020s were in order. The vintage, with its excellent acidity, good concentration, and structure, should work very well with the Grivot style.
And so it does. Most of the Grivot wines are showing nicely indeed, and the extraction is well judged, at a level at which one avoids the dark, concentrated notes often associated with the more intensely worked 2020s.

As always, Mathilde Grivot presents the wines in an efficient and charming way; it is always a pleasure to visit here.

The 2020 tasting
Domaine Jean Grivot Bourgogne Rouge 2020
The Bourgogne Rouge is showing serious character and concentration. Even the lesser wines here seem to have fine liveliness and energy in 2020. It has a lovely, salty finish, and a delightful character.
(Drink From 2022) – Good+ – Tasted from cask 18/11/21 –
Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 2020
The Vosne village is quite intense and structured, with nice acidity. It’s somehow lacking a bit of the flamboyance of the 2019, but regardless, it has a lovely classical tone and nice Vosne spiciness. Well done.
(Drink From 2030) – Very Good (89-90p) – Tasted from cask 18/11/21 –
Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Laviéres 2020
The Aux Laviéres is concentrated and, for me, a bit on the dark side, with its iron notes and saltiness on the finish. Classic NSG, but I do like them a tad lighter.
(Drink From 2030) – Very Good (88p) – Tasted from cask 18/11/21
Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Charmois 2020
The Charmois is full and earthy, with the richness of the vintage. Well-balanced, with the extraction spot on, this offers beautiful drinkability.
(Drink From 2029) – Very Good (88-89p) – Tasted from cask 18/11/21 –
Domaine Jean Grivot Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveau 2020
On the border of Chambolle and Flagey, the Combe d’Orveau contains a triumvirate of levels, with the village, 1er cru, and grand cru vineyards spread among very different geologies. This is from the valley’s southern part, which is perhaps more Flagey than Chambolle limestone. It’s a vivid, energetic wine, and one of the stars of the Grivot portfolio in 2020. This always seems to deliver on the hedonistic parameters, and leaves you with a big smile.
(Drink From 2030) – Fine (89-90p) – Tasted from cask 18/11/21 –
Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée Bossiéres 2020
The Vosne Bossiéres is a step up from the regular Vosne village. Classical, and with fine energy, this is not flamboyant, but does have a lovely, floral style showing a fine range of Vosne spices.
(Drink From 2030) – Very Good (89-90p) – Tasted from cask 18/11/21 –
Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 2020
The Chaumes is not one of Grivot’s stronger cuvees, coming as it does from the lower part of the vineyard. It lacks a bit of energy and hedonistic charm, but nevertheless is drinking fairly well.
(Drink From 2030) – Fine+ (90p) – Tasted from cask 18/11/21

- Visit Domaine Grivot – Tasting the 2019s from tankThere’s still time to get the last 2019 tastings in the book – or should I say on the blog.
