First taste of the 2017s from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair … a rather fresh and vivid vintage.
After 2015 and 2016 – intense and dense vintages we find the 2017 a lighter and perhaps more lively and vivacious vintage.
I do find many wines from Vosne-Romanee very well balanced in the 2017 vintage – and while it’s not wines of a decennium vintage .. it’s still in some places a rather gorgeous vintage in my view. And to be honest Liger-Belair really seemed to have nailed the 2017s.
Transparent and energetic wines – plenty of fruit and immediacy. First and foremost they do seem to be quite apparent, and in the depth and profoundness .. matched by few in the vintage.
Are the 2015 better – yes – but the effortless pleasure of the 2017s will somehow match even some of the better vintages .. at least in the short and medium run.
Tasting notes for the Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair 2017s
I had the pleasure of tasting the 2017s from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair on June 1. 2018.
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Vosne Romanee 2017
The generic Vosne is showing lovely character with it’s slight mineral citrus note on the palate. The nose offer forward juicy fruit – floral with a lovely complexity – notes of violets, peony rose. On the palate quite vibrant and vivid – a fine start indeed.
(Drink From 2026) – Very Good – (88 – 90p) – Tasted 01/06/2018 – from CASK
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Vosne Romanee Colombiere 2017
The Vosne Colombiere is a step up quality wise .. with the oak slightly more discrete currently. The nose offer plenty of fruit – lovely depth. On the palate fresh and energetic fruit … love the vivid fruit in this vintage,

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Vosne Romanee Clos du Chateau 2017
The Clos de Chateau is brimming with fruit – forward as always – enjoyable and lovelable. Not quite the density of the 2015 – but plenty of stuffing and oompf. Lovely display of spices, minerals and fruit – tremendous note of pomegranate in the vivid mid-palate fruit. I do adore this wine.
(Drink from 2026) – Fine – (90 – 92p) – Tasted 01/06/2018 – from CASK

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Vosne Romanee Les Chaumes 2017
The Vosne-Romanee Les Chaumes is also showing beautifully (15 – 20% whole cluster). In my view Les Chaumes is offering more and more hedonistic pleasure as the years passes – and while the complexity is somewhat limited – the pure joy of drinking this wine is tremendous. The bouquet is brimming with fruit and spiciness .. violets, peony rose .. The palate is offering a juicy and fresh fruit – no doubt that that the Biodynamic methods are showing strong results here.
(Drink from 2027) – Fine – (91 – 93p) – Tasted 01/06/2018 – from CASK

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Vosne Romanee Les Suchots 2017
A return to more normal yields after the frost in 2016. The nose is quite crammed with juicy fruit – red and dark berries – quite intense. On the palate lovely juicy fruit – energetic and vibrant. Quite firm on the tannins – 20% whole cluster.
(Drink from 2027) – Very Fine – (92 – 93p) – Tasted 01/06/2018 – from CASK

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Vosne Romanee Aux Brulees 2017
The Vosne-Romanee Aux Brulees is sadly not made for commercial use .. but only used for tastings and charity events. A tremendous pleasure to taste this wine … also in 2017. The 2017 is very open and hedonistic .. with the fruit and the Vosne spices glowing. The bouquet is brimming with warm fruit notes and a lovely mineral note. On the palate rich, vivid and with a quite considerable length .. a tremendous and very enjoyable wine.
(Drink from 2028) – Outstanding – (93 – 94p) – Tasted 01/06/2017 – from CASK

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Nuits-St-Georges Clos des Grandes Vignes 2017
Very spicy on the nose – deep, intense and a lovely expression of Premeaux – or if you like the southern end of Nuits-Saint-Georges. The nose is brimming of airy intensity and depth. On the palate deep, long and energetic offering both a vivid energy and lovely drinkability. Classic Premeaux + classic Liger-Belair.
(Drink from 2027) – Very Fine+ – (93 – 94p) – Tasted 10/11/2017 – from CASK
