Morning in NSG – and then the rain came!!
The night between August 27th and 28th, the rain came to Burgundy… and quite an intense thunderstorm lasting quite some hours … enough to invigorate the harvest in the Nuits-Saint-Georges area. The preliminary figures are 18 mm to 35 mm … so at most borderline useful for diluting the concentrated juice … and this could prove good for the drinkability.
This will most likely set a new scene for the rest of the harvest, as the dry vineyards now get some juice to work with. Will this help … possibly… is it too late? Time will show.
This sort of reminds me of the 1929 vintage (yes, the Winehog do have a good memory). The rain, however, came too late for many … but perhaps the late pickers can gain some juice and get some lightness or airiness … let’s see!
There are some top-end vignerons still harvesting – Domaine Garcia, Domaine Georges Noëllat, Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg and Thomas Bouley. Some are starting the harvest, Domaine Cathiard, Domaine Gros Frère et Sœur, and Domaine Grivot, to mention a few.
Some of these are starting next week, so a closing phase of the 2026 harvest – we will see how these wines hold up with alcohol and pH.
