Wednesday morning in NSG – harvest is moving on… although it has become relatively quiet in the vineyards.

Quite many had help from the rain, and in some vineyards the alcohol level dropped 1% to get it down to below 14%. It is mainly on richer soils one sees the effect of the rain, while on stony soils the effect is very small – if any.

It could be tempting to conclude on this – but I do think the truth will be found in the bottle … and stony mineral terroirs can sometimes do miracles when we talk about rich wines. The same goes for the big terroirs … they can carry a surprising weight of alcohol.

As always, I prefer below 13,5% … and the market is looking more and more at the alcohol level … so it will be difficult to sell 15% wines from poor and even average producers … we have plenty here in this end of Burgundy!

The final cut

There are still surprisingly many vignerons harvesting in Côte de Nuits … all the vignerons have their plans, harvesting resources, flexibility and agility.

Everyone is doing the best possible … this is and was for sure a difficult harvest.

I will continue to follow Burgundy … but not with the daily harvest report. My neighbour Marchand-Tawse ended the harvesting yesterday … so it’s time for me to do the same.

Thanks to all the vignerons giving me info at my visits – without these hands-on comments, I would be lost.
