Morning in NSG – overcast and 20 degrees Celsius!
The night between August 27th and 28th, the rain came to Burgundy… and quite an intense thunderstorm lasting quite some hours … enough to invigorate the harvest in the Nuits-Saint-Georges area. The rain and thunder gave quite ample “downpour”: 18 mm to 35 mm – most in Puligny and Meursault.
The next days will show what effect the rain will have. Most likely, the rain could have some diluting effect on the concentrated 2016 juice … and this could well prove good for the drinkability.
The other effect could be a speeding up of the degradation of the grapes … as the grapes become more fragile as they ripen. Currently there is some heat and sun damage of the grapes … but otherwise the grapes are in a very fine sanitary state,
There are some top-end vignerons still harvesting – Domaine Garcia, Domaine Georges Noëllat, Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg and Thomas Bouley. Some are just starting the harvest: Domaine Cathiard, Domaine Gros Frère et Sœur, and Domaine Grivot, to mention a few.
So a new 1929? … most like likely not – as the rain came too late for many … who finished the harvest just before the rain, but in reality it seems like the ripening and increase in alcohol has slowed down a bit … let’s see how long the grapes will hold up before the increase in pH becomes too problematic and acidity drops significantly.
This is today’s short news …
